ST. ALBANS, Vt. – The Vermont Catamounts men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2019 season with victories over conference foe UMass Lowell on Saturday at Hard'Ack Recreation Area.
The UVM women, led by
Autumn Albrecht, swept the top five to earn 15 points.
John Benner was the first of the Vermont men (16 pts.) to cross the finish line.

COACH'S QUOTE
"While both teams didn't execute exactly as well as we'd hoped, getting the outcome of two victories is always good," said head coach
Matt Belfield. "We will need to pay attention to the details of pace and effort early on if we are going to be as good as we can be. The effort was certainly there and I really like our teams and their leadership. I expect that we will only get better from here."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Albrecht finished in 18:08.00 to earn a margin of victory of seven seconds. The senior captain was followed by sophomore Konstanze Wendeln (18:15.00) and newcomer Bel Sogoloff (18:23.90).
- Rookie Meaghan Alba (18:29.40) and Jane Leighton (18:35.40) rounded out the Vermont scorers.
- Benner finished the 8k in 25:21.00, followed by fellow captain Neville Caulfield (25:25.40).
- Ian Denis (25:28.90) and freshman Andrew Crompton (25:44.0) crossed the line after Caulfield and Benner, while Gavin Schmeck (25:55.7) was the final UVM scorer in sixth place.
NOTES
- Wendeln achieved a personal record with her finishing time in the 5k.
- Caulfield and Denis registered new personal records in the 8k. Denis eclipsed his previous mark by 28.6 seconds.
