BURLINGTON, Vt. – Theresa Schafzahl and Maude Poulin-Labelle each had three-point games as Vermont 8-8-5 (5-6-3 HEAW) defeated Providence (9-8-2, 6-6-0 HEAW) 4-3 on Military Appreciation Night, presented by Milton CAT.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Schafzahl opened the scoring with 6:07 left in the first period. The sophomore received a pass from Sini Karjalainen on the power play and wired a snap shot past Clare Minnerath (11 saves). Poulin-Labelle was credited with the secondary assist.
• UVM rattled off two unanswered goals before the midway point of the second period. Poulin-Labelle received a drop pass from Sara Levesque and beat Minnerath glove high. Kristina Shanahan fired a shot through Minnerath 1:58 later for a 3-0 lead. Sandra Abstreiter (10 saves) relieved the PC goaltender.
• Sara Hjalmarsson got Providence on the board with a low shot that beat Natalie Ferenc (22 saves). Hayley Lunny and Whitney Dove assisted on the goal that came with 8:11 left in the middle frame.
• Schafzahl registered her second of the game and sixth of the season on a give-and-go rush with Shanahan. Shanahan eventually found Schafzahl on the backdoor with 5:04 left in the second.
• The Friars battled back by scoring twice in the third period. Annelise Rice netted her second of the season in the early minutes of the frame. With the extra attacker, Dove pulled PC to within one with 48 seconds left in regulation.

NOTES

• Ève-Audrey Picard became the fourth Catamount in program history to reach 90 career points. The senior had the secondary assist on Poulin-Labelle's goal to achieve the milestone.
• Poulin-Labelle became the first UVM blueliner to notch 10 goals in a season since Taylor Willard '18 did in the 2015-16 campaign.
• With the victory, the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to a Vermont charity, bringing the 2020 total to 2 win totaling $200. A special thank you to Vermont Mutual Insurance for their support. A new beneficiary of the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign will be announced at the men's basketball game on Wednesday (Jan. 8).
