COACH'S QUOTE
"There were a few things we liked about our game tonight but only a few," said Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft. "The continued development of
Tyler Harmon and his evolution into an elite Hockey East goaltender is a true positive. He faced 49 shots tonight against heavy shooters and was calm until the end. Our penalty kill showed signs of progress but we need to limit our penalties. It is no secret that yesterday's excellent game came with only one penalty kill."
"The play of
Cody Schiavon, our newest member was also something to be happy about," continued Woodcroft. "The first five minutes, which we knew would be important, was handled very well, resulting in an early goal for. However, lack of puck discipline cost us two goals and we ended up chasing the game the rest of the night. We cannot afford to do that."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts opened the scoring for the first time this season with a goal 2:27 in. Owen Grant fired a hard-low shot towards Providence's Jaxson Stauber that he padded aside but Vlad Dzhioshvili collected the rebound and fired it in for his first of the season. Jacques Bouquot was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.
- With 4:28 left in the opening frame the Friars equalized on a broken play in front of Harmon. Andrew Lucas was able to strip the puck from Greg Printz in the slot with a stick check but puck bounced perfectly to Parker Ford who buried a quick shot past Harmon for his second goal of the season.
- 1:15 later Providence struck again to take its first lead of the night. Craig Needham fired a shot towards the Vermont goal, it was heading wide, but struck a Vermont defender in front. With the puck at his skates Matt Koopman was able to tap it home for his second of the season.
- In the second period the Friars put the pressure on the Catamounts outshooting Vermont 13-6. The Catamounts had two power play opportunities in the second period but only generated one shot.
- Tyce Thompson put the game away for the Friars 6:32 into the third period. His third goal of the season was reviewed as Vermont believed the puck had hit the protective netting above the glass prior to going in, but after review the goal stood. Nick Poisson and Jason O'Neill were credited with assists on the goal.
