COACH'S QUOTE
"What a great weekend of hockey at Gutterson," Head Coach
Jim Plumer said. "I am so proud of the way we battled Northeastern. We really fought them tooth and nail in both games and today we had a really short bench. This wasn't the result we wanted but I can this team improving and I know we have good things ahead of us."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts opened the scoring 4:47 into the first period in transition. Cam Morrissey entered the Northeastern zone and took the puck around the net before attempting a centering feed. Morrissey's feed tipped off Alyssa Holmes and right to Kristina Shanahan who uncorked a high and powerful slap shot. Northeastern's Gwyneth Philips made a shoulder save deflecting the puck high in the air and it came down in the crease. As a NU defender tried to block off Holmes she inadvertently knocked it in her own net.
- The Huskies answered back with 27 seconds left in the first period. Maureen Murphy scored her 11th goal of the season from just inside the faceoff circle. Her wrist shot through traffic hit the post and bounced in off UVM's Blanka Škodová.
- The two squads played a back and forth but scoreless second frame. Northeastern outshot Vermont 8-7 in the middle stanza.
- With 5:54 left in the third period Northeastern's Andrea Renner broke the tie with her second goal of the season. She just beat Škodová to the post on a wraparound attempt. Katy Knoll and Skylar Irving earned assists on the game-winner.
- 28 seconds later the Huskies doubled their advantage with a two-on-one down low. Katie Cipra pressured a Vermont defender and she pushed the puck forward to NU's Tessa Ward. Ward fed a pass to Cipra down low and she beat Škodová with a quick move to the backhand.
