COACH'S QUOTE
"We didn't finish out the game as planned," Mayer Women's Basketball Coach
Alisa Kresge said. "In order to win in this league, we can't go on a scoring drought for the last seven minutes of the game. Given our struggle on offense down the stretch, we still could've won the game with stops. Unfortunately, we had multiple defensive breakdowns within our fundamental principles of defense. Moving forward, we have to do better job of playing as the aggressor and not on our heels."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anna Olson scored the first eight points for the Catamounts as they built an early advantage. The Black Bears used an 8-0 run over 2:58 to take a 14-10 lead.
- Vermont closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run with a three-pointer from Josie Larkins and an impressive drive to the bucket from Emma Utterback to take a 15-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
- The second quarter started just as the first had ended with an Utterback drive and another Larkins triple leading to a Maine timeout with UVM up 20-14. The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter and UVM carried a four-point edge into the half.
- Olson had six points in the third quarter leading the way for Vermont. On five occasions the UVM lead stretched to six or seven points but each time Maine clawed its way back into the contest. Maine's Caroline Bornemann scored at the buzzer to cut the UVM lead back to four heading to the final frame.
- Olson converted back-to-back layups to give UVM an 57-49 lead with 7:14 to go in the contest. Maine would score on its next three trips down the court including back-to-back three-pointers from Bornemann and Anne Simon to tie the game at 57 with 5:26 to go.
- Vermont went cold from the field down the stretch and Maine outscored UVM 10-1 to seal the win.
