COACH'S QUOTE
"It was a hard-fought game and credit to Providence, especially their goalie," Head Coach
Jim Plumer said. "I thought it was a good first game back for us and we certainly created a lot of offensive chances. Hopefully Sunday we will get back to finishing our chances."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts came out strong after the holiday break and the majority of the first period was played in the Providence zone. UVM outshot the Friars 17-7 in the opening 20 minutes but couldn't solve PC's Sandra Abstreiter.
- First year forward and reigning Hockey East Rookie of the Week Evelyne Blais-Savoie opened the scoring 9:28 into the second period. In transition Alex Gray fed the puck to Blais-Savoie in the slot and she fired a wrist shot just under Abstreiter's blocker for her second goal in as many games.
- 2:12 later Sara Hjalmarsson equalized on a shorthanded breakaway. She forced a turnover at the blueline and skate in alone on UVM's Sydney Correa. Hjalmarsson faked a shot and then beat Correa with a backhand.
- Hjalmarsson gave the Friars its first lead of the game with her second goal of the game with 5:24 left in the middle frame. From a sharp angle, she beat Correa with a perfect shot just under the crossbar.
- Providence's Lily Martinson added an insurance marker 4:38 into the third period for the Friars. Her first career goal came after a fortuitous bounce in front of the Vermont net.
