COACH'S QUOTE
"That was a very good game for UVM Hockey and much closer to the complete game that we would like to have," said Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft. "We didn't quit and showed resilience throughout the contest. Our goaltending was once again stellar and has given us a chance to win every game of late. We had solid contributions from all lines and players. For our team to succeed, we will need to play a near perfect game to our identity and we were very close to that tonight. We as coaches are pleased with the effort tonight."
"Lastly, we would like to recognize our seniors for what will be their last home game at the Gut, we will be finishing the season on the road and then the playoffs will all be road games," continued Woodcroft. "Each of these fine young men has given something special to UVM and the Burlington community. We thank them for their service to this program and wish them all the success they deserve in the future. Thank you to each of them."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts opened the scoring 4:52 into the first period. Andrew Lucas collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and blew past a UMass Lowell defender heading towards the net. The River Hawks defender recovered and brought Lucas down on the play just as he was tucking the puck past Owen Savory for his first goal of the season.
- UMass Lowell's Nik Armstrong-Kingkade rang one of the post with 1:32 left in the opening frame but the River Hawks couldn't solve Vermont's Tyler Harmon as he made 15 saves in the first. First-year Gabe Carriere took over for Harmon at the start of the second frame following an injury.
- The River Hawks equalized on the power play 12:11 into the second period. Chase Blackmun beat Carriere with a wrist shot from the slot for his fifth goal of the season.
- UMass Lowell took the lead with some luck on its side early in the third. An Andre Lee point shot deflected off Reid Stefanson's leg and in at the 3:07 mark of the final frame.
- The Catamounts comeback attempt seemed to be thwarted with a Matt Brown empty-netter with 47 seconds left but Vermont had other ideas. With Carriere pulled for an extra-attacker the Catamounts pulled back within one. Vlad Dzhioshvili won a draw in the UML zone and Jacques Bouquot got it back to Christian Evers at the point. Evers found Tristan Mullin in the slot and he turned and fired beating Savory with a quick low shot for his fourth goal of the season with 28 seconds remaining.
- Dzhioshvili won the ensuring faceoff at center ice and Vermont did get the puck back into the Lowell zone late but wasn't able to equalize.
