CATONSVILLE, Md. – An impressive defensive performance from UMBC led the Retrievers to a 10-8 upset win over No. 13/16 Vermont Saturday afternoon in America East action. With the win, the Retrievers moved into a first-place tie with Vermont at 4-1 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers opened the scoring with the first two goals of the game staking an early lead 5:55 into the first quarter. Brian Tregoning and Keith Dukes scored for UMBC.
- Vermont responded right away. Thomas McConvey scored his 19th goal of the season 24 seconds after UMBC's second goal. Griffin Fenech fed a perfect pass to a cutting McConvey who one-touched it home. UVM equalized with 4:47 left in the first frame with an EMO goal from Stone Jacobs.
- UMBC took the lead back with a Nick Dupuis tally with 2:36 left in the first and then scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead with 8:22 left in the half.
- Liam Limoges and JJ Levandowski scored in the final minutes of the quarter but the Retrievers look a 6-4 lead into the half.
- After an EMO goal from UMBC pushed their advantage to three again Fenech scored his fifth goal of the season to make it 7-5 with 9:26 left in the third quarter. The Retrievers scored two goals in 22 seconds late in the frame and took a 9-5 edge to the final 15 minutes.
- UMBC's Taylor Bohanan stretched the Retrievers lead to five with his second goal of the season 2:50 into the fourth quarter. The UVM push came a minute later Michael McCormack scored his 18th of the year to make it 10-6 and then McConvey and Jacobs scored two goals in 1:13 to make it a two-goal lead with 7:05 left in regulation.
- UMBC's Tommy Lingner made three saves in the final 6:04 to seal the Retrievers first win over a ranked opponent since defeating UAlbany on April 6, 2018.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Tommy Burke was 10 for 12 at the faceoff x for the Catamounts in the first half. He finished the afternoon winning 15 of 22 draws. He also collected a game-high nine ground balls.
- This afternoon was sophomore Stony Jacobs' first career multi-goal game for the Catamounts. He has four goals and eight points this season.
WHO'S NEXT
Vermont plays its first repeat opponent of the season next weekend when it travels to UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 10. Faceoff under the lights against the River Hawks is set for 7 p.m.
