COACH'S QUOTE
"There are no easy matches in this conference - we cannot give up 14 corners in 60 minutes and expect to win" head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "We need to clean up our team defense and be able to possess the ball in critical moments to close out a 2-1 game with five minutes to go. That is the next step for this group, and the mentality we need as we get ready for the next one."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vermont opened the scoring 1:28 into the contest after earning the first corner of the game at the 1:15 mark. UAlbany's Lara Behn made two initial saves on Lydia Maitland and Sophia Dress but the loose ball remained up for grabs. Lydia Maitland gathered the ball and fed a pass through the goalmouth to Kate Hall who tapped it into the empty net for her third goal of the season.
- UAlbany equalized on its first penalty corner of the afternoon 5:58 into the game. Robyn Murray blasted a shot from the top of the shooting circle with the assist going to Julie Rodijk. The teams headed to halftime at one apiece.
- In the third quarter the Great Danes outshot UVM 3-0, all three of their opportunities came in the last five minutes on penalty corners. Puck Kwaspen made a defensive save on the goal line to keep the teams knotted at one.
- Vermont earned four penalty corners at the start of the final quarter and converted on its fourth. Puck Kwaspen and Hall combined to setup Clodagh Ferry at the top of the shooting circle. Ferry fired a hard-low shot past Behn for her sixth goal of the campaign with 11:28 left in regulation.
- UAlbany equalized with 4:41 left in regulation to force overtime. On a penalty corner opportunity Elaina Burchell was able to redirect an Smisdom attempt just past UVM's Sierra Espeland.
- The Catamounts had the best early opportunities in the overtime session, earning consecutive penalty corners. On the second opportunity Behn made a diving save on Kwaspen. The rebound came to Ferry at the side of the net. Ferry's shot attempt beat Behn but UAlbany's Jannelle Volk kept it out.
- In transition, the Great Danes combined to earn the game winner. UAlbany had a two-on-one opportunity and as Espeland and the UVM defender tried to stop the chance the officials ruled UVM covered the ball and awarded a penalty stroke.
- UAlbany's Smisdom confidently stepped up and fired the game-winner in the top left corner for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
