Nagy's Free Kick Lifts #20 Cats to 2-1 Win Over #21 New Hampshire

FINAL SCORE: No. 20 Vermont 2, No. 21 New Hampshire 1
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Alex Nagy's 69th-minute tally lifted 20th-ranked Vermont (13-2-1, 5-1-0 AE) to a 2-1 comeback victory over 21st-ranked New Hampshire (11-4-0, 5-1-0 AE) in front of a raucous crowd Friday night at Virtue Field. After tonight's win the Catamounts control their own destiny in the America East Tournament. With a tie on Tuesday at UAlbany they'd clinch a bye to the semifinals, with a win they'd claim a share of the America East Regular Season Championship and the top-seed in the tournament.

COACH'S QUOTE
"It was a really special night to have two national powerhouses at Virtue Field," head coach Rob Dow said. "For us to have a second half that was dominating, with pressure and chances created, that's Vermont soccer."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Hampshire struck first in the 16th minute with a goal by Eli Goldman. The Wildcat forward directed a shot into the lower left corner after receiving a pass from Yannick Bright.
  • Joe Morrison notched the equalizer minutes later when he blasted a shot from long range into the upper right corner to beat Jassem Koleilat (3 saves). The fifth-year senior's second goal of the season came in the 23rd minute, and kept the conference rivals tied heading into the break.
  • The Catamounts came out on the attack in the second half with five unanswered shots in the first 20 minutes of the frame. Nagy would register the clinching tally shortly after when he bent a free kick around the UNH wall for his seventh goal of the season.
  • New Hampshire pressured Nate Silveira (3 saves) late in the game in search of the equalizer. The UVM goalkeeper recorded two key stops in the final five minutes to preserve the lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • UVM's record against opponents in the RPI Top-25 improves to 2-0-1 with the victory.
  • Nagy registered a team-high three shots, directing two on goal. The midfielder's game-winning goal is his third of the season, which leads the team.
  • The Catamounts outshot the Wildcats 6-3 in the final frame to fuel their come-from-behind victory.
  • With today's win, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to COTS, the Committee on Temporary Shelter, as part of the Cats Win, Community Wins initiative. Since the campaigns inauguration in 2017, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group has donated over $72,000 to local non-profits.
UP NEXT
