Mullen Leads Catamounts in Win Over Manhattan

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 16, Manhattan 11
BURLINGTON, Vt. – A 7-1 run over 16 minutes helped the Catamounts surge past Manhattan in an 16-11 non-conference victory Monday afternoon from Virtue Field. With the win, Vermont improved to 6-1 and the Jaspers fell to 4-3.

"I'm glad with how we started our game today," head coach Sarah Dalton Graddock said. "That had been a big focus for us with having a strong first quarter."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Against the top faceoff team in the nation the Catamounts won the first three draws of the contest and built a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter with goals from Taylor Mullen, McKenzie Ballard and Ava Vasile. Vermont led 3-1 after the first quarter.
  • After a back and forth second quarter the Catamounts seized control with two goals late in the half. Ballard scored her 10th goal of the season with 20 seconds to go to make it a 7-5 Vermont lead. UVM won the ensuing draw and added another tally. Mullen beat the buzzer with a one-touch shot right in front of the net to complete her hat trick.
  • UVM's Maris Large, Meghan O'Connor and Riley Halloran scored the first three goals of the third quarter as the Catamounts seized a 11-5 lead 4:19 into the second half. Vasile added back-to-back goals 2:51 to apart to make it 13-6 with 3:04 left in the quarter.
  • Vermont's Sophie McLaughlin, who was named America East Defensive Player of the Week Monday, made six saves in three quarters for the Catamounts. Junior Jackie Shipp took over in the fourth quarter and made two saves for Vermont.
  • Maddie Erskine scored two goals in the fourth quarter as UVM closed out their second home win of the campaign.

  • The Catamounts caused a season-high 20 turnovers Monday.
  • Senior Taylor Mullen registered a season-high seven points with four goals and three assists. The seven points are the most by a Catamount in a single game this season.
  • Ava Vasile scored three goals today, she has at least a hat trick in all six games she's played this year.
