PROVIDENCE, R.I. – #7 Providence used two second period goals 54 seconds apart to pull away from Vermont in a 4-1 win Friday evening from Schneider Arena in the Hockey East opener for both clubs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Friars opened the scoring 10:28 into the first period as Jaroslav Chmelar picked up his first goal of the season. Tanner Adams fired an initial shot on a wraparound that redirected back in the slot to Chmelar. Chmelar one-timed a perfect shot top corner to make it 1-0.
- Providence scored twice in 54 seconds midway through the second period to make it an 3-0 advantage. With intense traffic in front of Vermont's Gabe Carriere Taige Harding fired a well-placed wrist from the point for his first goal of the season at the 7:35 mark. Luke Krys first of the season at the 8:29 mark came on a one-timer from the top of the slot.
- Vermont's Simon Jellus cut into the Friars lead with 8:56 to play in the middle frame. Zach Dubinsky won a puck battle on the half-wall and got the puck to Jellus. Simon curled toward the slot and beat PC's Philip Svedeback with a wicked wrist shot for his third goal of the season.
- Providence's Chase Yoder put the game out of reach on the power play with 5:14 to play in regulation.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gabe Carriere made 42 saves in the blue paint for Vermont Friday night. It was his fifth career game for the Catamounts making 40 or more saves. Â
- The Catamounts blocked eight shots Friday night, Xavier Henry and Lucas Jones each blocked two apiece.
- Joel Määttä won a game-high 14 faceoffs Friday evening.
