Delaware Defeats Women’s Basketball in Final Day of Gulf Coast Showcase

ESTERO, FL – The Catamounts (3-4) fell 62-50 against Delaware (2-3) on Sunday (Nov. 26) morning at Hertz Arena in the seventh place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded baskets over the first eight minutes of the game and were tied at 11 with 3:39 to go. Anna Olson and Bella Vito each had four for the Catamounts and Emma Utterback knocked down a three during that span.
  • Tara Cousins hit back-to-back threes that would spark a Blue Hens 21-9 run that stretched into the second quarter giving Delaware a 32-20 advantage with just under four minutes to go until halftime. During that stretch Cousins led all scorers with 10 points. Anna Olson scored four for Vermont during that span.
  • Vermont battled back over the final 3:57 of the half to trim it to single digits, 35-26, heading into the break.
  • Vermont came out strong in the third quarter with a quick 5-1 run to get within five with 8:51 remaining.
  • Over the next two minutes Delaware rattled off a 9-2 run to gain a 45-33 advantage.
  • Both teams battled back-and-forth over the rest of the quarter with Vermont trimming the deficit down to 47-44 with 37 seconds left following two Vito free throws. Olson and Nikola Priede led the Catamounts with four points each.
  • Delaware ended the quarter with a three to push their lead to 50-44, and they never looked back.
  • The Blue Hens pushed their lead back to double digits (63-53) with a three from Sydney Boone with 4:20 left in the game.
  • Chloe Wilson connected on two free throws (11-for-14) for Delaware to give them their largest lead of the game at 73-59 with 1:33 remaining.
  • Vermont applied pressure down the stretch wand connected on their free throws for a 7-0 spurt to give the game its final score of 73-66.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olson scored a team-high 21 points alongside six rebounds and three assists.
  • Utterback scored 16 points on an efficient 58.3 percent (7-for-12) shooting. With her total today, Utterback moves into 10th place in Vermont program history with 1,379 points for her career.
  • In her first career start, Gonzalez finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
  • Vito registered seven points, four rebounds, one steal and one block for Vermont.
  • Vermont drew 22 fouls and knocked down 19-of-27 (70.4 percent) of their free throws.

The Catamounts will return from the Gulf Coast Showcase to face Dartmouth at Patrick Gym on Thursday (Nov. 30). Tip for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Rob Ryan and Bernie Cieplicki on the call. MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT
Thursday's matchup with the Big Green will be the Catamounts annual Military Appreciation Night presented by Milton Cat. All active and retired military members with a valid identification will receive free admission.
