Catamounts Drop Conference Opener at UAlbany

ALBANY, NY – Kayla Cooper had 17 points to help UAlbany (11-3, 1-0 AE) defeat Vermont (5-10, 0-1 AE) in the opening night of America East play.

COACH'S QUOTE
"A difference of two halves, I don't know how you show up and don't show up. Quite concerning how we started the game, but there is positivity to how we finished the game. We are going to take a look at both of those and learn from it and got to change something," said Mayer Head Women's Basketball Coach Alisa Kresge. "We have a quick turnaround, and that's where we have to put our focus now."  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes opened the game on a 10-2 run, with Malia Lenz scoring the lone bucket.
  • Following the first media timeout, UAlbany closed the first quarter on a 6-2 run, with Catherine Gilwee getting the Catamounts bucket.
  • The Great Danes opened the second quarter on a 16-2 run, with Bella Vito scoring after Vermont was held without a bucket for seven minutes.
  • The Catamounts then went on a 13-4 to close out the first half. Anna Olson had nine points, and Nikola Priede had four.
  • Vermont opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run with four points from Vito and three from Gilwee.
  • Following a timeout, UAlbany responded with a 9-0 run to push their lead back to 21.
  • The Catamounts finished the third quarter on a 7-4 run with three from Gilwee and two from Vito and Priede each.
  • Vermont began the fourth quarter on a 12-6 to take them to the final media timeout. Olson had seven, Sarah Ericson had three, and Priede had two for the Catamounts.
  • The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, with Vermont having a slight edge, 10-7.
  • Vito had five, Olson had three, and Gilwee had two in the stretch.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olson led all Catamounts with 19 points, while Vito and Gilwee had 13 and 10 respectively.
  • Vito led Vermont on the boards with 11, which was a season-high and marked her first double-double of the season. Ericson was second, with a season-high of eight rebounds.
  • Olson set a season-high in assists, with six, and was one short of a career-high.
  • Despite being down 17 at the half, the Catamounts outscored the Great Danes 36-28 in the second half. They shot 14-25 from the field and 3-7 from three.
