Catamounts Put Together Strong Performance to Defeat NJIT

NEWARK, NJ– Keira Hanson had a season 19 points, and Vermont (10-10, 5-1 AE) held NJIT (6-13, 3-3 AE) to a season-low 10 points in the first half en route to victory.

"Very with how we set the tone defensively in the first half, our offense in the first quarter felt good as well, but credit to NJIT for turning up the heat defensively and slowing our offense down," said Mayer Head Women's Basketball Coach Alisa Kresge. "We found a way to win on the road and that's hard to do."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts opened on an 11-4 over the first five minutes with six points from Sarah Ericson, two from Catherine Gilwee and Nikola Priede, and a free throw from Bella Vito.
  • Vermont closed on a 9-2 run, with Hanson scoring all nine points.
  • The Catamounts opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run with three points from Sarah Lazar and two from Gilwee and Priede each.
  • Following the media timeout, the two teams traded baskets, with Vermont outscoring the Highlanders 5-4. Emma Haan had three, while Hanson had the other two.
  • NJIT opened the second half on an 8-2 run into the third media timeout, with Priede the only player to score.
  • The Catamounts closed the third quarter on a 9-4 run with Anna Olson scoring, Malia Lenz and Priede with two each, and Hanson with a free throw.
  • Vermont and the Highlanders went back and forth to open the fourth, but the Catamounts outscored NJIT 13-10. Hanson had seven, Olson had four, and Priede had two.
  • The Highlanders closed on a 6-4 run, with Piper Risdon scoring all four points.  
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hanson led all scorers with 19, while Priede and Olson were second and third with 10 and eight, respectively.
  • Olson and Vito led Vermont on the boards with eight each, while Ericson was second with six.
  • Vito led the Catamounts in sharing the ball with four assists, while Olson had three and Ericson had two.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, Vermont matched their season highs in blocks with seven and steals with 10. Ericson and Lazar led the way in blocks with two each. Olson had a career-high four steals, while Vito was second with three.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO CELEBRATE NGWSD FEB. 8 
The UVM Women's Basketball team will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day powered by Vermont Mutual Insurance Group on Saturday, Feb. 8, during their game against UAlbany at 2:00 p.m.
 
On Feb. 8, girls from the local community interested in sports and being involved in this celebration will have the opportunity to become members of the UVM Athletic Staff for the day. Girls between 4th and 8th grade can apply to a wide variety of positions including: Public Address Announcer, Marketing Assistant, Ticket Staff, and many more! Participants will be able to work in the position for one half of the game; for the other half, they will be able to watch the game with family. 
 
All applications must be submitted by 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. Participants selected will be informed by 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the very latest. Those chosen to participate will receive a free ticket and discounted tickets for family and friends who wish to attend the game.
