COACH'S QUOTE
"I was proud of Phil Törnqvist for his leadership and care factor," said Head Coach
Steve Wiedler. "Same goes for
Aiden Wright and
Jack Malinski. Unfortunately, we gave SCSU too many PP's we really couldn't get into the game because we had to exhaust so much energy killing. Our Penalty Kill also needs major work. That's a good St. Cloud team, not taking anything away from them, but our staff needs to dial it in. That starts with me. Period, stop."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Austin Burnevik opened the scoring for the Huskies on the power play with 1:41 left in the first period. Vermont's Aiden Wright made five saves on the kill but couldn't stop the sixth. Wright made an initial save on Tyson Gross in front, but Burnevik backhanded the rebound home to make it 1-0.
- St. Cloud State doubled its advantage 2:14 into the second period, once again on the man advantage. In transition Barrett Hall split two Vermont defenders to skate in alone on Wright. Hall wired a shot just under the bar to make it 2-0.
- Just 1:05 later the Huskies added another on the power play. With a Vermont defender hurt on the play after blocking a shot Burnevik attempted a cross-crease pass that found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
- Max Smolinski closed out the scoring for the Huskies with a power play goal 8:35 into the final frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Aiden Wright made 40 saves for the Catamounts in 53:49 of game action. Junior Axel Mangbo saw his first action of the season making one stop in 6:11.
- Wright is the first UVM goaltender in the Hockey East era (since 2005-06) to record 40 or more saves in back-to-back games.
- Sebastian Törnqvist led all skaters' Saturday night with four blocked shots.
