COACH'S QUOTE
"This was a good challenge for us for the first game," said Head Coach
Jim Plumer. "Penn State is an excellent team, and I knew it would take us a while to adjust to the pace. Despite their territorial advantage we made it difficult to score on us and we played hard to the end.
Ellie Simmons was outstanding in net, and it was great to see a healthy
Kaylee Lewis get us on the scoreboard. We will hope to be better tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened scoring a little over halfway through the first frame when an odd bounce on UVM's blueline allowed Grace Outwater to break free on a breakaway, putting her shot under the glove of Vermont's goalie earning the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage.
- Maddy Christian doubled Penn State's lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first period, securing her first goal of the season, earning the Nittany Lions a 2-0 edge.
- Tessa Janecke made the Catamounts pay for starting the second period on the power play, scoring her second goal of the season sniping a shot from the far circle glove side high, giving Penn State a three-goal cushion early in the second frame.
- Vermont found the back of the net 13:36 into the second period, seeing Lewis make a spectacular defensive play to get the puck out of UVM's own zone leading to a breakaway opportunity for Lewis. Upon reaching the circle hashmarks, she unleashed a snapshot to the glove side of Katie Desa beating her high, securing her first goal of the season and cutting the deficit to 3-1.
- UVM saw two powerplay opportunities in the final period, but no goals were scored by either team throughout the final 20 minutes of action as Penn State skated away with the 3-1 victory from Gutterson Fieldhouse.
