Women's Basketball Tops Sacred Heart Behind Priede’s 25-Point Double-Double

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 63, Sacred Heart 46 

FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Senior Nikola Priede recorded her fourth double-double of the season as Vermont (9–3, 0–0 AE) defeated Sacred Heart (2-7, 0-0 MAAC) on Sunday afternoon at the William H. Pitt Athletic and Convocation Center.

"Road wins are never easy to come by, and we were able to get one today," said Mayer Women's Basketball Head Coach Alisa Kresge. "Rebounding was going to be key in today's match-up. We found a way to limit their offensive rebounds and win the battle on the glass. We have another tough road game with a very quick turnaround." 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At the first timeout, Vermont trailed 10-8 after junior Naylce Dudley hit a three-pointer for Sacred Heart.

  • The Catamounts scored seven straight points to end the first quarter, including five from senior Keira Hanson. Hanson capped the quarter with a buzzer-beating three to give Vermont a 17-12 lead.

  • Vermont opened the second quarter with a spin-and-layup by sophomore Savanna Creal, followed by a close-range jumper from senior Nikola Priede to make it 21-12 Vermont lead with 7:19 left in the half.

  • Both teams traded baskets to close the second quarter, highlighted by a three-pointer from senior Jadyn Weltz at 2:48, followed by a Sacred Heart layup from first-year Sophie Nascimento.

  • In the third quarter, Priede scored 12 points. Her final field goal of the quarter came on a Weltz assist, converting a three-point play to help Vermont take a 45-34 lead into the fourth.

  • The fourth quarter started with Priede scoring on a fadeaway in the paint, followed by a Weltz corner three assisted by Priede, giving Vermont a 50-36 lead.

  • Vermont went on a 10-0 run, starting with a transition layup by junior Malia Lenz and ending with a junior Emma Kirby layup for Sacred Heart. 

  • Vermont's final points came on a corner three by first-year Lia Hanson.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Priede led all Catamounts with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

  • Hanson went 3-for-4 from three-point range, scoring 17 points and grabbing four rebounds.

  • Weltz added 10 points and dished out a team-high nine assists.

  • Vermont shot 24-for-53 from the field for 45.3%.

  • The Catamounts were efficient from beyond the arc, hitting 6 of 12 three-pointers for 50%.

  • Vermont recorded 28 assists compared to eight for Sacred Heart.

  • With today's Win, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to the Lund Family Center through the Cat's Win, Community Win's initiative. Vermont Mutual has donated over $5 Million Dollars since launching their Charitable Giving Fund in 2014.

UP NEXT
