Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener at UMBC

BALTIMORE — Jordan Galloway had three goals and two assists as UMBC (3-2, 1-0 AE) defeated Vermont (2-4, 0-1 AE).

"Credit to UMBC for defending their home field today. We have to start stronger and play more composed for these conference games," said head coach Chris Feifs. "Our focus now shifts to preparing for Bryant at home next week."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers opened the scoring three minutes in when Xander Maxwell scored unassisted.
  • UMBC then scored three goals in two minutes to give them a 4-0 lead. Mike Dunleavy scored with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter before Jordan Galloway scored twice in a minute to extend the advantage.
  • Galloway completed his hat trick with five minutes left in the second quarter, scoring off an assist from Nick Gutierrez to make it a 5-0 Retriever lead.
  • Cullen Decker got the Catamount's first goal of the day when he scored off an assist from Zach Davis with 8:06 to go in the second quarter.
  • Connor Chick made it a five-goal advantage once again for UMBC when he scored with 3:31 to go in the half off an assist from Gutierrez.
  • A minute later, Luke Reiter scored unassisted to cut the deficit back down to four for Vermont.
  • Chick got his second goal of the game with 25 seconds left when he scored unassisted to make it 7-2.
  • Corey Myers made it 8-2 just two minutes into the second half off an assist from Galloway.
  • Decker got his second at 11:58 in the third quarter as he took to the air to cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • Matthew Drimmie scored with 5:20 to go in the third quarter off an assist from Pat Coughlin to make it 8-4.
  • Reiter got his second 90 seconds into the fourth quarter when he scored off an assist from Coughlin.
  • Less than a minute later, Tristan Whitaker got his first of the game to cut it to 8-6.
  • Maxwell got his second of the game at the 11:13 mark of the fourth quarter to push the Retriever's lead back to 9-6.
  • UMBC made it 10-6 when Ryan Demato scored with 2:02 to go in the game with an assist from Gutierrez.
  • Reiter got his third of the afternoon at 1:10 to go when he scored off an assist from Decker.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Reiter was the Catamounts leading scorer with his first hat trick of the season. Decker was second with two goals, while Drimmie and Whitaker were third with a goal each.
  • Reiter and Decker were the top point-getters, with three each. Coughlin was second with two points, which marked the first two points of his collegiate career. Drimmie, Davis, and Whitaker all had a point.  
  • Henry Dodge led Vermont in ground balls with 11, the fourth game this season in which he has recorded double-digit ground balls. Jack Combs was second with six, while Eddie Schwasnick was third with three.
  • Dodge continued his dominant season at the faceoff x, going 15-19, his third game with 15 or more faceoff wins.
  • Combs caused three turnovers, while Colin Bullock caused the other.
