BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Saturday, January 24, with a full day of events honoring the achievements of girls and women in sports while encouraging young girls in the local community to get involved and pursue leadership opportunities through athletics.
The celebration will be highlighted by the University of Vermont women's basketball game against Bryant at 2 p.m. in Patrick Gym, with National Girls and Women in Sports Day presented by Vermont Mutual. Vermont Mutual has pledged to donate $1 to She Roars for every fan in attendance at the women's basketball game. "Vermont Mutual is proud to support National Girls and Women in Sports Day at UVM and to celebrate the female student-athletes who inspire confidence, leadership, and opportunity for girls throughout our community," said Sarah Young, Vice President and Chief People Officer at Vermont Mutual.
In collaboration with Strong Girls United, She Roars will host a pre-game, field-day-style event from 12:30–1:30 p.m. at the indoor track inside the Gucciardi Fitness Center. Participants will rotate through a variety of activity stations, including relay races, confidence-building exercises, and mental health workshops. Check-in will open at 12:10 p.m. in the lobby of the Gucciardi Fitness Center. All activities will be developed by Strong Girls United and led by members of She Roars. Each participant will receive a complimentary She Roars x Strong Girls United T-shirt, courtesy of Vermont Mutual. In addition, girls in grades 4–8 from the local community will have the opportunity to serve as members of the UVM Athletics staff for the day during the women's basketball game. Participants may apply for a variety of roles, including Public Address Announcer, Marketing Assistant, Ticket Staff, and more. Selected participants will work in their assigned role for one half of the game and spend the other half enjoying the game with family.
Applications for the shadowing program are available at https://go.uvm.edu/26ngwsd and must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 16. Selected participants will be notified by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 19.
Participants of the pre-game activities and shadowing opportunity will receive a complimentary ticket to the game. Parents, guardians, and family members may purchase tickets at a discounted rate at https://uvmathletics.evenue.net/promotions/SGU.
The NGWSD celebration continues as the UVM Swimming & Diving team hosts a 1 p.m. home meet against Siena. The meet will serve as the team's Rally Around Mental Health meet presented by Redstone, their Spread Respect meet, and Senior Day, with the UVM Alumni Association serving as the presenting sponsor of the senior ceremony. Fans are invited to bring new or gently used children's books centered on diversity and inclusion, which will be donated to JFK Elementary School.
