COACH'S QUOTE
"This one was a real grind and I'm proud that we found a way to win," said Head Coach
Jim Plumer. "Credit to BU for playing hard while they were shorthanded and it knocked us off our game. Major kudos to our penalty kill for killing four penalties in the third period, including a five-on-three that was over a minute. Huge game for
Stella Retrum who accounted for both goals and
Zoe Cliche shut BU down after an early first goal. We've got to stay focused and be ready for Providence next weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boston University came out the gate on fire, blitzing Vermont in the first 20 seconds, earning the early 1-0 lead thanks to Sydney Healey successfully executing the two-on-one rush after getting fed by Clara Yuhn, securing her 13th goal of the season.
- UVM responded 10:12 into the opening period, seeing Lauren O'Hara dish a pass to Natalie Zarcone who was circling behind the net, finding Retrum in front of who tallied her ninth goal of the season during her 100th career game, bringing Vermont back to within even with the Terriers, 1-1.
- The Catamounts nearly scored once again with 41 seconds remaining in the first period when Julia Mesplède corralled a rebound off an initial shot from Oona Havana in the slot, firing it towards goal, but the puck rang off the crossbar, keeping the game knotted at 1-1.
- Vermont gained the lead 13:16 into the second period while on the power play when a Terrier defender blindly sauced the puck to the middle of the ice where Retrum was waiting. Retrum wasted no time slapping the puck through Michelle Pasiechnyk's five-hole, scoring her second goal of the game, earning the Catamounts a 2-1 advantage.
- With a little over seven minutes remaining, the Catamounts found themselves with two players in the box, defending a Boston University five-on-three advantage. Cliche came up big, making three crucial saves for Vermont while being down two players, successfully killing both penalties as UVM returned to even strength.
- With time winding down at the end of the third, Boston University pulled its goalie to get the extra attacker on the ice, but nothing was to show for it as Cliche saved the final two shots sent her way, securing Vermont the 2-1 victory on Saturday from Walter Brown Arena.
