COACH'S QUOTE
"UMBC is a very good team, and they always make things difficult, especially here at UMBC," said Head Coach Adrian Dubois. "I thought our guys fought incredibly hard tonight and kept at it for 90 minutes. It was an outstanding collective performance, and once again, our bench was tremendous and played a major role in the result. A great late goal from
Luis Vetter and a great team win on the road."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each team spent the opening 45 minutes of action trying to figure out a way to maneuver around the opponent's defense, seeing only one shot on goal courtesy of UMBC's Flynn Holdem, which Niklas Herceg saved in the fourth minute.
- The Catamounts pounced on the scoreboard in the 87th minute with time quickly expiring. Aleksei Carnier sent a cross to the six-yard box, finding the head of Vetter who pinned the ball to the bottom left corner of the net, securing his second goal on the campaign and lifting Vermont ahead 1-0.
- UMBC picked up the offensive pressure in the final minutes, nearly scoring an equalizer when Holdem found himself all alone inside the 18-yard box, using his right foot to shoot the ball towards goal which was headed straight for the top right corner. Herceg was able to leap high and bat the ball upwards, forcing the Holdem shock to ring off the crossbar. Vermont was able to successfully clear the ball out of harm's way.
- Vermont maintained any last push from the Retrievers as time in regulation was winding down, ultimately walking away with the 1-0 victory.
