Men’s Lacrosse Finishes 1-1 in North Carolina, Falling to No. 9 Duke 22-6

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 6, Duke 22

DURHAM, N.C. – Vermont (1-1) fell to Duke (3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium. Duke had 28 shots on goal compared to Vermont's 15.

"Today was a great learning opportunity for our program," said head coach Chris Feifs. "Duke played great and took advantage of our mistakes. We will grow from this game and turn the page for our first home game this week." 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Duke Blue Devils opened with two quick goals from Ben Johnston and Brady Scioletti, but the Catamounts answered with a 2-1 run from the 10:35 to 8:20 mark of the first quarter on goals from Ethan Pearson and Kean Paré.

  • Duke closed the first quarter with five straight goals, with two coming from both Johnston and Kyle Colsey, and one from Max Sloat. 

  • Paré added his second goal at 12:51 of the second quarter, but the Blue Devils responded with four consecutive scores to take a 12-3 lead into halftime.

  • Duke continued to pull away in the third, scoring eight unanswered goals before Luke Reiter found the back of the net with one second remaining in the quarter. 

  • Pearson opened the fourth with his second goal, picking the top-left corner off an assist from Harrison Josloff.

  • The Blue Devils countered with a goal from Owen Gaffney. Jack Combs would answer with a goal of his own. Duke added one more late score to seal the 22-6 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Pearson paced the Vermont with three points, scoring twice and adding an assist.

  • Paré and Zack Toll each finished with two points, as Paré scored two goals and Toll dished out two assists.

  • Reiter and Combs each added a goal on the day, while Walter Zhao and Josloff recorded an assist apiece. 

  • For the Blue Devils, Johnston and Colsey each netted six goals. 

  • Duke had a 30-21 edge in groundballs and forced nine caused turnovers to the Catamounts' six.
