COACH'S QUOTE
"It's playoff time and that's what we have to get through our heads," said Head Coach
Steve Wiedler. "Habits and details. Every puck matters, every play matters at this time of year. The second period burns me up as a competitor. We were in that game against a very good PC team and we don't execute details. We responded really well after the timeout in the second period. But again, every puck matters. We don't have the luxury of those mental lapses at this time of year. Positive is I know we have better than that and I believe in the direction our program is heading."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the third straight game the Catamounts opened the scoring in the first period. In transition Ethan Burroughs fed the puck to Cédrick Guindon at center ice. Guindon hit Colin Kessler in stride as he split the Providence defense at the blueline and skated in alone on PC's Jack Parsons. Kessler skated in tight before roofing a shot for his sixth goal of the season 4:12 into the contest.
- The Friars equalized with a power play goal with 10:56 to play in the first period. John Mustard beat Axel Mangbo with a quick snapshot from the top of the slot to make it 1-1 with his 13th goal of the season.
- Providence took its first lead of the game with a shorthanded tally with 5:05 to play in the first period. In transition Will Elger fired a shot towards the net UVM net. Mangbo made the initial save but the puck squeaked through his pads and sat in the crease. Elger was first to the loose puck and tapped it home for his eighth goal of the season.
- The Friars extended their lead 1:11 into the second period. Roger McQueen took a feed from behind the net and one-timed his 10th goal of the year past Aiden Wright, who took over for Mangbo after the first period.
- Kale McCallum made it a 4-1 lead with his fifth goal of the season 6:15 into the second period. A shot towards Wright bounced off traffic in front of the net and fell right to McCallum in the slot who placed in the top corner.
- After the McCallum goal the Catamounts used their timeout to regroup. Just 14 seconds after the timeout Vermont answered back. Sebastian Törnqvist found the back of the net through traffic to make it 4-2. Jonah Aegerter and Jens Richards assisted on Törnqvist's fifth goal of the season.
- Tanner Adams scored an empty net goal with 1:40 to play in regulation to seal Providence's 11th Hockey East win of 2026.
