Women’s Lacrosse Defeats LIU 22-7 at Home on Saturday Afternoon

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 22, LIU 7
BURLINGTON, VT. – Vermont (4-2) defeated LIU (2-3) 22-7 thanks to a career-high 17 draw controls from Sabine Godwin and career-high five goals from Caitlin Haggerty.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LIU opened the game scoring at the 11:09 mark to go up 1-0.
  • Two minutes later, the Sharks added another goal, extending their lead to 2-0 in the first quarter.
  • Caitlin Haggerty responded with a goal assisted by Ava Wilde at the 6:17 mark.
  • LIU answered with two goals, taking a 4-1 lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • Haggerty scored her second goal of the game with under 20 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Karina Sethi and Lydia Doraz each scored unassisted in the first minute of the quarter, tying the game at four.
  • Sethi followed with consecutive unassisted goals, giving Vermont a 6-4 lead with 11 minutes left in the second quarter.
  • Jane Trauger scored at the 9:52 mark, extending the Catamounts' lead to 7-4.
  • LIUscored with eight minutes remaining, narrowingt the deficit to tw.o.
  • Sethi tallied her fourth goal, and Ali Cabot added her first, putting Vermont ahead 9-5.
  • Haggerty scored twice in the final two minutes of the second quarter, sending the Catamounts into halftime with an 11-5 lead.
  • LIU opened the second half with a goal, but Lyla Kimball and Lauren Lefebvre each scored in the first three minutes of the third quarter, giving the Catamounts a 12-6 lead.
  • Haggerty recorded her fifth goal with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Lauren Lefebvre assisted Lindsay Lefebvre, increasing Vermont's lead to 14-6 at the 6:13 mark.
  • Kimball and Trauger scored consecutive goals, giving Vermont a 16-6 lead with three minutes remaining.
  • Doraz scored, followed by Jill Mele's first collegiate goal, as the Catamounts extended their lead to 18-6.
  • LIU added a goal, but Vermont finished strong with two goals from Doraz and one each from Lauren Lefebvre and Trauger.

The Catamounts will host Villanova on Friday (Mar. 6). Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV. Friday's contest is the Rally Against Cancer Game presented by Mascoma Bank. Fans can receive a free Rally Against Cancer rally towel and lavender beanie, courtesy of Mascoma Bank.
