SENIOR SEASON (2018): Captained the team and started all 16 games on defense in Vermont’s most successful season in program history ... Recorded an assist in UVM’s 11-10 overtime win over Jacksonville (March 3) ... Finished the season tied for third on the team with 40 ground balls ... Tallied 19 caused turnovers, the sixth-highest single season total in program history.
JUNIOR SEASON (2017): Captained the Catamounts along with Ben Cox, Hayden Jenkins, Ian MacKay and Cam Milligan ... Appeared in all 13 games, earning 12 starts ... Caused a team-best 19 turnovers and scooped 32 ground balls, third among the group ... Began the season with a pair of caused turnovers as well as a scoop at Furman (Feb. 2) ... Had an assist at Mercer (Feb. 4) to go with three ground balls and a cause ... Picked up a career-high six ground balls at Dartmouth (Feb. 28) and caused a single-game best four turnovers ... Against No. 8 Albany (March 18), registered four ground balls and three caused turnovers ... Was part of a Vermont group that started 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
SOPHOMORE SEASON (2016): Saw action in all 17 games, starting 16 ... Scored a goal against Providence (Feb. 27) ... Collected 47 ground balls, second best on the team ... Produced a team-high 22 caused turnovers.
FRESHMAN SEASON (2015): Started all 16 games on defense … Made his collegiate debut in the season opener at Penn State (Feb. 7) ... Ranked third on the team in both ground balls (36) and caused turnovers (9) ... Scored his first career goal at Georgetown (March 10) … Notched a season-high five ground balls against Hartford (April 18) ... Picked up three or more ground balls in eight games.
BEFORE UVM: Came to Vermont from Seabrook, New Hampshire and Governor’s Academy (Mass.) … Named a team captain and won the Coaches’ Award in his senior season … Helped lead his squad to a league championship title in 2012.
PERSONAL: Is the son of Peter and Elizabeth Leary … Has two siblings: Peter and Kate … Kate played ice hockey at Boston College … His cousin, Kara Leary, was an All-American basketball player at Notre Dame … His other cousin, Sarah Leary, was an All-American lacrosse goalie at Harvard … James also played football in high school and was a team captain.
