Joe Gervais begins his 29th year as a member of the University of Vermont athletic department in 2020-21. Gervais was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services in December of 2005 and in September of 2007, he was elevated to Associate Athletic Director. Gervais currently oversees NCAA Compliance functions and serves as sport administrator for men’s and women’s ice hockey and men’s lacrosse. He sits on the Athletic Department leadership team, serves as liaison to several UVM departments, and beginning in 2018 also serves on the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee.

A former Catamount student-athlete in men's ice hockey, the 1988 Vermont graduate returned to his alma mater in 1992 to serve as an assistant men's ice hockey coach. He spent four years teaching English and serving as an assistant hockey and football coach at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn. Gervais helped establish UVM's CHAMPS/Life Skills program in the fall of 2000. He developed the curriculum and implemented a Student-Athlete Development course that is mandatory for all first-year intercollegiate student-athletes. The course focuses on the development of academic skills, healthy behaviors and personal leadership.

Gervais lives in Colchester with his wife, Patti. The couple has a son, Josh (UVM ’18), and a daughter, Rachel (UVM ’21).
