SETTING THE SCENEThe Catamounts have won their first four games of the year to match their best start since 2005 when UVM began the season 7-0-0. Last season, Vermont officially welcomed Notre Dame to Hockey East in early November as the teams split a weekend set with a pair of one-goal games in Burlington during the 50th anniversary weekend. The Cats moved up four spots to No. 13 in this week's USCHO.com Poll and entered the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll at No. 14.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH | WebsiteNotre Dame entered the USCHO.com poll at No. 20 this week after sweeping Niagara at home last weekend by a combined score of 13-3. The Fighting Irish has won four straight games after losing its first two of the season and has played all six of its contests at home. Mario Lucia leads the team with six goals and is tied with Robbie Russo for the team-lead in points with eight, while Russo has added five assists through six games. Freshman Cal Petersen (1.34 GAA, .950 SV%) and sophomore Chad Katunar (3.03 GAA, .895 SV%) have each started three games in net with 2-1-0 records.
SERIES HISTORYThis weekend marks the fifth and sixth all-time meetings between Vermont and Notre Dame. The teams split their first-ever Hockey East series last season in Burlington as UVM earned a 2-1 victory followed by a 3-2 loss at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The first two meetings of the series came on neutral ice during tournaments hosted by New Hampshire (1999) and Dartmouth (2002).
LAST TIME OUT: VERMONT 2, UCONN 1 | HighlightsBrody Hoffman stopped 21 of 22 shots as then-No. 17 Vermont held off UConn 2-1 at sold out Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday night in the first Hockey East matchup between the schools.
Alexx Privitera scored his first goal in a UVM jersey on the power play in the second period, and
Mike Stenerson added an insurance goal in the third for the eventual game-winner. Trevor Gerling got the Huskies on the board with seven minutes left in regulation, but Vermont held on to extend its unbeaten start. UVM was 3-for-3 on the kill to remain perfect on the year (14-for-14).
PERFECTION THROUGH FOURWith a perfect 4-0-0 record, Vermont is one of only five unbeaten teams in the nation along with Boston University, Michigan Tech, Minnesota, and Northern Michigan. UVM has out-scored its opponents 13-4 through the first four games and has not trailed for a single second this season. The Cats had a shutout streak of 135:31 snapped in the third period against UConn on Saturday which dated back to Oct. 17 vs. Clarkson. 11 different skaters have registered a point in the winning streak, and eight different players have netted at least one goal.
