BURLINGTON, Vt. – Meghann Treacy made 38 saves to earn her first shutout of the season as Maine defeated Vermont 3-0 in Hockey East action from Gutterson Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
Â
The Black Bears opened the scoring 14 seconds into the first period. Seconds after winning the opening faceoff Kristin Gilmour fired a wrist shot from the point through traffic that deflected off the post and in to give Maine an early lead. Gilmour's second goal of the season was assisted by Hailey Browne.
Â
Maine extended its lead to two with another even strength goal just over three minutes after Gilmour's goal. Brooklyn Langlois fired a shot from the point that Abbey Cook deflected in front, Vermont's
Madison Litchfield made the initial save but Langlois gathered the rebound and fired it in for her second goal of the season.
Â
After a scoreless second frame the Black Bears added an insurance marker on the power play 9:40 into the third period. In the midst of a mad scramble in front of the Vermont net Brooke Stacey passed back to Audra Richards who skated into the slot and fired a shot past Litchfield for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
The Catamounts had three power play opportunities in the third period and poured a game-high 15 shots on net but they couldn't solve Treacy as Maine picked up its fifth Hockey East win of the season.
Â
"All the credit goes to Maine for playing an excellent game but it was a very disappointing outing for us," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "We have dug ourselves a hole in nearly all of our last seven games and that is simply not a recipe for success. We've got to fight our way out of it."

Vermont returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Maine at 2 p.m. in the second game of the weekend series. Fans can watch a free HD stream of the game at CatamounTV.com.
