SETTING THE SCENEThe Cats have won seven of their last nine games overall and are out-scoring opponents 24-6 during their four-game winning streak. Vermont is ranked 10th in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Division I polls. UVM was idle last weekend after posting a 7-2-1 record in November, including a 5-2-1 mark in Hockey East play. Vermont is third in the league standings with 15 points in its first 11 Hockey East games. Â
SCOUTING THE SAINTS | WebsiteSt. Lawrence enters the weekend at 8-6-1 (4-3-0 ECAC) as the Saints come off a 2-1 loss against league rival Clarkson on Saturday at home. SLU is led by senior assistant captain Patrick Doherty, who has posted five goals and seven assists for a team-high 12 points. Rookie goalie Kyle Hayton has started all 15 games in net with an 8-6-1 record, 2.11 goals against average, and .935 save percentage. Greg Carvel is in his third full year as head coach following the retirement of 26-year head coach Joe Marsh.Â
SERIES HISTORYSt. Lawrence University is Vermont's second-longest standing rival in men's hockey behind UNH as the former ECAC rivals meet for the 90th time on Friday. Vermont is 21-14-2 all-time against the Saints at Gutterson Fieldhouse and beat SLU 5-1 at home last December. The Catamounts also defeated the Saints 4-2 on the road on Jan. 7, 2014 of last season as eight different players recorded at least one point. UVM has won three straight over St. Lawrence and five of the last seven matchups overall.
HISTORIC STARTWith an 11-3-1 overall record, Vermont has matched its best 15-game start to a season since the 2005-06 campaign. That season, the Catamount lost their 16th game 2-1 at home to St. Lawrence as the Saints scored the game-winner with five minutes left. UVM is 5-0-0 at home for the first time since the 1987-88 team won its first eight home games and didn't lose at Gutterson until Jan. 29. Vermont is also perfect (4-0-0) in non-conference play thus far.
WEEKEND SWEEP AT MAINEVermont swept Maine on the road two weekends ago on Nov. 28-29 in a non-conference series with two three-goal victories in Orono. It marked the Catamounts' first weekend sweep at Alfond Arena since Feb. 27-28, 2009 when they went on to the NCAA Frozen Four. UVM scored four unanswered goals to win the opener 6-3 on Friday, then skated past the Black Bears 4-1 in the second game on Saturday as
Brady Shaw's power play goal held up for the game-winner.
THIRD PERIOD DOMINANCEOver their last 10 contests, the Catamounts are out-scoring opponents 12-1 in the third period. The only team to score in that span was UMass on Nov. 25 with just 31 seconds left. UVM has allowed just three goals in the final frame since the season opener, and it boasts a plus-10 goal differential on the season (15-5). Vermont's opponents are averaging just 7.5 shots in the last 20 minutes.
COUNTDOWN TO 750Vermont is three wins away from the 750th victory in program history. UVM is 747-746-114 during its 51 years as a men's hockey program and owns a record of 402-301-59 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts notched their 400th all-time win at Gutterson on Friday, Nov. 7 with a come-from-behind 4-3 overtime triumph against Maine.Â
