EUGENE, Ore. – University of Vermont senior
Nika Ouellette finished 13th overall in the women's javelin competition on Wednesday night at the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field. Ouellette matched Morgan Powers '12 (10,000-meter run) as the highest NCAA national finisher in program history.
Ouellette posted a distance of 48.82 meters on her first of three attempts to earn sixth place in her flight, coming just 1.19 meters shy of her personal best. The senior will earn Second Team All-America honors for the second time, finishing among the top-16 competitors. She concludes her career as a three-time NCAA All-American.
"I am very impressed with the way Nika competed during the championship season," said head coach
Matt Belfield. "She was relaxed, confident, and focused. Most of all, she found a way to really enjoy the competition.
Greg Wisser did a very nice job coaching her, and I know Nika really appreciated all the support she has received this year."
The Brookline, Mass. native became the first female in school history to reach the 50-meter mark in the javelin at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round in Florida two weeks ago. She won her fourth straight women's javelin title at the 2014 America East Championships, becoming the first athlete to accomplish the feat in conference history.
