BURLINGTON, Vt. - Â Claudia Marin Samper tallied a pair of goals to lead Hofstra past Vermont, 4-0, in the opening game of the 2014 Catamount Field Hockey Classic Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field.

Hofstra (5-1) opened the scoring on a goal by Charlotte Loehr 13 minutes into play. Loehr picked up a rebound and sent a shot into the back of the net to give the Pride an early advantage.

Vermont (0-5) nearly evened the score a few minutes later on a pair of scoring opportunities. Senior captain
Ashley McDonald fired a shot from five yards out, but was turned away by Hofstra goalie Carys Swan. Freshman
Taylor Gaines was able to corral the rebound and sent a shot that was headed towards net, but was eventually blocked by a Hofstra defender.

Janel Boileau and Samper netted a goal apiece in the final 15 minutes of the first half to send the Pride into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

Samper scored her second goal of the contest 12 minutes into the second period to give the Pride a 4-0 advantage. Hofstra was able to hold off Vermont for the remainder of the period to earn their fifth win of the year.

Emily Snowden and
Lena Benwood split time in goal for Vermont and combined for six saves. Swan stopped five shots to earn the victory for Hofstra.
