FARMVILLE, Va. – Kate Harvey scored off a penalty corner in overtime to lift Longwood to a 2-1 victory over Vermont in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
Early in the overtime period, Jennifer Burris sent a pass to Harvey from the corner and Harvey fired a low shot from the top of the circle. The shot found its way into the back of the net for the game-winning tally.
The Lancers jumped ahead of Vermont midway through the second half after working the ball downfield and into the Vermont zone, where they earned a penalty corner. Burris sent a pass to the top of the circle and Lil-Sophie Achterwinter fired a low shot past UVM goalie
Lena Benwood to put the Lancers on top, 1-0.
With just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest, the Catamounts drew a foul in Longwood's circle and earned a penalty stroke attempt. Freshman
Taylor Gaines lifted the ball just inside the post and past Lauren Bernard for her second penalty stroke goal of the season. Gaines' team-leading fourth tally of the year knotted the score up at 1-1.
Benwood made several diving saves in the overtime period to keep the Catamounts alive, and stopped a total of 10 shots in the contest. Bernard earned the win in goal for Longwood after making four saves.
With the win, Longwood improves to 4-6 on the season, while Vermont falls to 0-8.
