ORONO, Maine – Juniors
Alicia Clark and
Dan Moroney each won their races on Saturday as the Vermont men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2014 season at the America East Pre-Conference Meet, hosted by Maine. The women's team won the meet, while the men's squad placed second overall to begin the new campaign.
Vermont swept the top three spots in the women's 5K event as Clark won with a time of 18:57.91 and led from start to finish.
Julie Richer posted a time of 19:20.93 for second place, while
Hilary Rawding crossed the finish line in 19:22.98 for third.
Sydney Durand was the fourth Catamount finisher as the senior placed sixth overall with a time of 19:28.85, while
Denali Balser earned 11th with a time of 20:02.54.
Amber Peirsol (20:18.38) and
Colleen Yancey (20:22.55) rounded out the team's top-7 in 16th and 17th respectively.
On the men's side, Moroney also led the five mile run from start to finish and crossed the line with a mark of 25:59.17.
Dylan Souder ran a time of 26:25.35 for third overall, while
Patrick Coppinger finished third on the team in seventh place overall with a time of 26:42.72.
The trio of
Thomas O'Leary (27:05.90),
Aaron Anderstrom (27:06.16), and
Aaron Lucci (27:11.61) earned spots 14-16 for UVM, and rounding out the top-7 was rookie
Noah Bell (27:47.40) in 31st.
The Catamounts return to action next Saturday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts for the UMass Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
