BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior
Ethan O'Day led three Catamounts in double figures, netting 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds, as Vermont posted a 71-57 victory over visiting Stony Brook before 2,475 fans at Patrick Gymnasium on Saturday. The Catamounts remain unbeaten in league play, moving to 3-0 and are 7-8 overall. Stony Brook had its five-game win streak snapped and fell to 10-7 on the year and 1-1 in America East.
O'Day was 5-for-12 from the field, 6-for-6 from the foul line and added three blocks.
Kurt Steidl added 13 points and
Dre Wills chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Jameel Warney, the Division I leader in rebounds and double-doubles this season, paced Stony Brook with 26 points and 10 boards. Rayshuan McGrew added 10 points for the Seawolves.

Photo Gallery Vermont used a solid defensive effort to earn its 13th straight America East regular season victory. The Catamounts held Stony Brook to 37.3 percent shooting from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and out rebounded the Seawolves 30-26 overall and 23-17 on the defensive glass. Stony Brook entered the game with a plus-10 advantage over opponents on the boards.
The Catamounts jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game. Stony Brook answered with an 11-0 run and a 3-pointer by Deshaun Thrower pushed the Seawolves in front 11-10 at the 11:02 mark of the first half.
Vermont trailed by one with 9:36 remaining in the half, but the Catamounts rattled off eight straight points, punctuated by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Hector Harold and Steidl to retake the lead and push out in front 22-15. Stony Brook closed within two twice in the final minutes, but Vermont went to the locker room with a 28-24 lead.
UVM out scored Stony Brook 12-6 in the opening four minutes of the second stanza to open up a 10-point advantage on the Seawolves. Vermont's lead grew to 14 at the 9:40 mark, before Stony Brook mounted a comeback attempt. The Seawolves scored 15 of the next 21 points and a basket by Warney with 4:09 remaining brought Stony Brook within five, 62-57.
The Catamounts held Stony Brook scoreless over the final four minutes and went 7-for-8 from the line to earn the win and improve to 5-2 at Patrick Gymnasium.
