BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior goaltender Brittni Mowat made 30 saves to earn her first shutout of the season as No. 9 Bemidji State defeated Vermont 3-0 Saturday evening in non-conference action at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Catamounts opened the game with sustained pressure in the Bemidji State zone, registering the first four shots of the game. Vermont earned a power play opportunity but Mowat shut the door to keep things scoreless.
 
After a second successful Beavers penalty kill they opened the scoring with 4:46 left in the first period. On the rush Summer Thibodeau cut down the wing and fired a high shot that was stopped by Vermont's Madison Litchfield. Reilly Fawcett fired the rebound back towards the goal and again Litchfield made the save, but amidst the maze of bodies Ciscely Nelson was able to stash it home for her first career goal.
 
The Beavers extended their lead at the 10:59 mark of the second period. Lauren Miller passed along the blue line to Madison Hutchinson who fired a low shot towards the net. From just outside the slot Kristin Huber redirected the puck under the bar and past Litchfield.
 
Hanna Moher added an insurance marker with 4:33 left in the third period. On a two-on-one rush she skated into the slot and fired a wrist shot past Litchfield for her second goal of the season.
 
"I was really pleased with our effort today," said head coach Jim Plumer. "We nearly tripled our shot total from yesterday and were able to generate many more quality chances. Credit to Bemidji for playing tough and their goalie was outstanding."
 
The Catamounts return to action Friday October 9 as they host #5 Clarkson at 7 p.m. It will be Vermont's third straight game against a ranked team to open the campaign. It will be the Golden Knights first trip to Gutterson Fieldhouse since September 30, 2010. The two teams will faceoff again Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
 
NOTES: Vermont generated seven shots on its power play but went 0 for 6 on the game with the man-advantage … The Catamounts killed off the Beavers one power play opportunity … Alyssa Gorecki led all skaters with 12 faceoff wins … Kourtney Menches blocked a team-high three shots, including two on Bemidji State's lone power play.
