FINAL SCORE: Vermont 4, No. 11 Boston University 2BOSTON – Brendan Bradley broke a 2-2 tie with nine minutes left in the third period and
Liam Coughlin potted an empty-netter for his first collegiate goal as Vermont downed 11
th-ranked Boston University 4-2 on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
The Catamounts improved to 4-9-2 (3-4-2 HEA) with the Hockey East victory, while the Terriers dropped to 7-5-3 (3-3-2 HEA).
Former BU Terrier
Alexx Privitera finished the night with a pair of assists, while
Anthony Petruzzelli (power play) and
Jarrid Privitera added tallies in the win.
Mike Santaguida stopped 28 shots in net for his fourth win of the season.
"A lot of things we've been harping on clicked tonight. We played as well as a team as we've played all year," said head coach
Kevin Sneddon. "There are a lot of ice bags and bumps-and-bruises in that locker room and that's what it takes to win."
The Terriers struck first at the 8:41 mark of the opening frame as Tommy Kelley beat Santaguida low glove side through a screen from the center point for his first of the year.
UVM answered back on its second power play at 13:58 as
Alexx Privitera fed Petruzzelli at the top of the right wing faceoff circle. The sophomore wristed a low show on target which beat Sean Maguire inside the left post through a screen. Rookie defenseman
Mike Lee added the second assist on the play.
Just 1:26 later, the Catamounts took their first lead when
Kevin Irwin forced a turnover in the BU slot.
Jarrid Privitera picked up the puck and skated in alone on goal, sliding a backhander under Maguire's right pad for a 2-1 cushion and his team-best sixth goal of the season.
Vermont killed off four Boston University power plays in the second period to preserve its advantage. Making his season debut,
Chris Muscoby nearly doubled the lead with UVM's best chance of the frame, but Maguire slid across to make a chest save on the junior's left circle wrister.
BU equalized seven minutes into the third as Jordan Greenway picked out Matt Lane in the slot. Lane spun to his forehand between the circles and slid a shot along the ice just inside the right post.
Bradley gave the Cats the lead for good at 10:55 after an
Alexx Privitera wrist shot from the right point. Coughlin found the puck at the right doorstep and sent a blind backhand pass to the top of the crease for Bradley to finish into an open net.
Both teams called their timeouts with 2:05 remaining, and the Terriers pulled Maguire for an extra skater.
Mario Puskarich nearly found the empty net with less than a minute left from neutral ice, but the junior fed Coughlin wide open for a tap-in as time expired to seal the league victory.
"We asked the guys after the game what the difference was and they said it was the details, the commitment and the sacrifice," Sneddon said. "We haven't had that for whatever reason and we need that."
The teams return to Agganis Arena on Saturday (Dec. 5) for a 4 p.m. afternoon faceoff to close the series. Pre-game coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. on WVMT 620-AM and SportsJuice.com with
