SETTING THE SCENEWith six games left in the regular season, the Catamounts (17 points) are sixth in the league standings but trail third-place UMass Lowell by just three points with two games in hand. The Eagles (22 points) have sole possession of second in Hockey East. After winning seven straight contests, UVM is just 2-7-1 in its last 10 games and split a series against New Hampshire last weekend at home. For the second straight week, Vermont is No. 17 in the USCHO.com poll and is receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES | WebsiteBoston College is 10-2-2 in its last 14 games to move into second place in the Hockey East standings behind rival Boston University. Sophomore Adam Gilmour leads the Eagles with 23 points on eight goals and 15 assists, while fellow sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald has a team-high 13 goals. Sophomore Thatcher Demko has started 25 games in net with a 15-8-2 record, 2.11 goals against average, and .926 save percentage. Head coach Jerry York earned his 500th career win at Boston College earlier this season at Denver on Nov. 1, 2014.
ROAD WARRIORSVermont is 8-4-1 on the road this season, out-scoring opponents 44-22 in those contests for a goals per game average of 3.4 and a goals against average of 1.7. UVM is 49-for-50 on the penalty kill away from home, including a streak of 26 in a row.
Mike Santaguida is 5-2-0 with a 1.01 goals against average and a .963 save percentage in nine appearances, while
Mario Puskarich has scored eight of his 11 goals on the road.
LAST FRIDAY: VERMONT 5, NEW HAMPSHIRE 2 | HighlightsBrady Shaw scored twice, including the game-winner on the power play in the third period, to lead UVM past UNH in the series opener.
Anthony Petruzzelli (1G, 1A) and
Mike Paliotta (2A) also had multi-point games for the Catamounts, who out-shot the Wildcats 34-29 on the night.
Brody Hoffman stopped 27 shots for his 11th win of the year, as Vermont collected its third straight win over New Hampshire for the first time since Oct. 19, 1996.
LAST SATURDAY: NEW HAMPSHIRE 6, VERMONT 3 | HighlightsUVM led 3-2 after 40 minutes, but UNH scored four unanswered goals in the third period to split the weekend. The Catamounts stormed back from 2-0 down with three power play goals in the second period to take their first lead.
Mike Paliotta,
Kevin Irwin, and
Colin Markison lit the lamp with the man advantage as UVM held an 18-4 shot advantage in the second. Casey Thrush scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 12:09 of the third.
