FINAL SCORE: Providence 12, Vermont 9 | Box Score
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cam Milligan and
James Barlow combined for seven goals, but Vermont fell at Providence by a final of 12-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Ray Treacy Track & Field Complex.
Milligan, a sophomore transfer from Towson, led the Catamount charge with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Barlow chipped in with three goals in the contest to collect his third straight hat trick to open the season. Freshman
Matt Gudas tallied a goal and an assist for the first points of his career.
Buck McClure led Providence in the tilt with three goals and a pair of assists, while Will Mazzone, Jake Cook and Michael Perettine each added two goals apiece to help pace the Friars.
Justin Rosenberg made his third consecutive start in the Vermont net and made 11 saves in the contest. Peter Badgley stopped 17 shots in the Providence cage to earn the win.
Vermont (0-3) opened the game with two of the first three scores, as Milligan and Barlow each found the back of the net in the first five minutes of play. Providence tallied the final four goals of the period, including two with under 15 seconds remaining, to take a 5-2 advantage into the second.
In the second quarter of play, Providence (1-1) outscored Vermont 2-1 behind tallies from McClure and Nolan Fillet. Milligan registered the lone goal for UVM in the stanza, which was his second of the game.
The Catamounts stormed back in the third period with four different players registering a goal apiece. Gudas got the scoring started with his first career goal at the 12:26 mark of the quarter. Providence answered with a pair of goals, but Barlow,
Alex Stanko and Milligan each scored in the final five-plus minutes to cut UVM's deficit to 9-7 heading into the final quarter.
Vermont and Providence traded goals to open the fourth before Milligan scored with 7:25 remaining to pull Vermont within one, 10-9. The Friars were able to halt the UVM comeback, responding with goals from Perettine and Mazzone to close out the 12-9 victory.
Both teams had 39 shots in the contest and Vermont held a slight advantage in shots on goal (26-23). The Catamounts also won the battle at the X, winning 15 of 23 faceoffs in the contest.
Luc LeBlanc won all 15 faceoffs for the Catamounts and also added a game-high eight ground balls.
The Catamounts return to Burlington for a tilt with Boston University on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 1:30 p.m.
