FINAL SCORE: Marist 11, Vermont 10 | Box Score | CatamounTV Highlights
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Marist used a second-half surge to come back and top Vermont by a score of 11-10 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Virtue Field. Marist moved to 2-1 overall, while Vermont dropped to 2-2 on the year.
Allison Gionta led the Marist charge with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Lexi Brannigan (3 g, 1 ast) and Kara McHugh (2 g, 2 ast) chipped in with four points each.
Senior
Marcie Marino topped all Catamounts with a season-high three goals and also added one assist in the contest.
Jessica Roach posted a goal and two helpers, while six other Catamounts registered a goal apiece, including rookie
Courtney Cole, who notched the first score of her career.
Abigail Witczak earned the win in goal for Marist with a nine-save performance.
Meg Hopkins took the loss for Vermont despite making five stops in the contest.
After a Marist goal to open the contest, Vermont tallied four of the next five scores to open a 4-2 advantage just over the midway mark of the first period. Four different Catamounts registered goals during the run, including Marino and Roach, who scored on free-position shots.
Both teams notched two goals apiece in the final 12-plus minutes of the first half, and Vermont headed into the break with a 6-4 advantage.
Marist registered the opening four goals of the second half, including a pair from Gionta, before
Emma Tizard ended the Red Foxes' run with her first goal of the season for Vermont.
A goal by Jackie DiMaria with just under 10 minutes remaining pushed Marist's lead to 10-8, but
Alison Bolt answered for the Catamounts to cut their deficit back to one score with 8:33 to play.
An Erin Schroeder goal with 2:50 left extended the Red Foxes' lead to 10-8, but Vermont responded once again on Cole's first career goal with 1:34 remaining.
Marist won the ensuing draw and controlled possession for the remaining minute-plus to secure the 11-10 victory.
UVM outshot Marist by a 29-23 margin in the contest, and also held advantages in ground balls (18-13) and draw controls (13-10).
