FINAL SCORE: Sacred Heart 21, Vermont 17 | Box ScoreFAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart held off a fourth period comeback by Vermont to defeat the Catamounts by a final of 21-17 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Campus Field.
Vermont (2-6) trailed 19-11 early in the fourth quarter before scoring six straight goals to cut its deficit to 19-17 with 5:55 remaining.
Dyson White netted a pair of scores and defenseman
Ben Cox registered his first career goal to propel UVM during the rally.
Sacred Heart (3-2) put an end to the Catamount run on a Brian Masi goal just under the two-minute mark, and Reed Avveduti added an insurance score in the final minute to secure the Pioneer victory.
White registered a career-high in both points (6) and goals (5) to lead the Catamounts in the contest. He tallied four of his goals in the second half, and propelled the Vermont comeback in the fourth period.
Cam Milligan (2 g, 2 ast),
Ian MacKay (2 g, 1 ast) and
James Barlow (2 g, 1 ast) each added multi-goal efforts on the afternoon.
Alex Dodge and Alec Dauses netted four goals apiece to lead the Pioneer charge, while Julian Garritano and Tim Caton chipped in with three scores each.
Jon Kaplan and
Justin Rosenberg split time in the Vermont net, combining for 15 saves in the game. Kaplan registered his fourth double-digit save performance of the season with 11 stops. Jon Flood earned the win for Sacred Heart with a 14-save effort.
Dauses and
Alex Stanko traded goals to open the game, before Sacred Heart went on a 3-0 run behind goals from three different scorers to take a 4-1 lead.
Michael Clarke notched the first goal of the second period, but the Pioneers went on to score three straight, including a pair of tallies from Dauses, to extend their advantage to 7-3 at the 12:15 mark.
Vermont rallied back to tally three of the next four scores, as MacKay and White each picked up two points during the run. Dodge answered with a pair of goals for the Pioneers, pushing their lead back to four.
Sacred Heart registered the final two goals of the quarter to head into the break with a 12-7 lead over the Catamounts.
After a pair of Pioneer goals to open the third, Barlow,
John Everett and White picked up a goal apiece to lead Vermont on a 3-0 run and cut the deficit to 14-10.
The Pioneers closed out the quarter by outscoring UVM 3-1 to widen their lead to 17-11 with just one period to play.
Following a pair of scores from Sacred Heart to open the final stanza, Vermont began its comeback attempt with six straight tallies, cutting the deficit to 19-17. White added his fourth and fifth goals of the contest during the streak, as he collected his career-high in scores.
The Pioneers put the game out of reach with the final pair of scores in the last two minutes, as they notched their third win of the campaign.
UVM opens conference play with a contest at America East newcomer UMass Lowell on Saturday (March 21) at 3 p.m.
