FINAL SCORE: Vermont 18, UMass Lowell 10 | Box ScoreLOWELL, Mass. – Cam Milligan tallied a career-high 10 points on four goals and six assists to lead Vermont past UMass Lowell, 18-10, in UVM's America East opener Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field. Vermont improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while UMass Lowell drops to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in America East.
Vermont registered a season-high 18 goals in the contest, led by Milligan's second four-goal output of the year. The sophomore also picked up his seventh multi-assist effort this season with six helpers. Milligan's 10 points were the most by a Catamount since Jamie Kirk tallied 10 against Quinnipiac back in 2006. Four other Catamounts notched multi-goal games, including
Ian MacKay (3 g, 2 ast) and
Dyson White (3 g, 1 ast).
Kyle Walsh (2 g),
Cam Stafford (1 g) and
Dan DiStefano (1 g) each collected their first career goals in the game.
Cory Highfield paced the River Hawks on the afternoon with a team-high four points on a pair of goals and assists, while Sean Tyrrell and Nicholas Pino chipped in with three goals each.
Jon Kaplan registered his fifth double-digit save performance of the season with 14 stops, as the sophomore earned his third career win. Alex Desmarais made 18 saves in just over 30 minutes in net for UMass Lowell.
After a pair of UMass Lowell goals to open the contest, Vermont rattled off six straight in the final eight-plus minutes of the first period to take a 6-2 advantage at the end of one. Milligan notched five of his nine points in the quarter on three goals and a pair of assists.
Tyrrell and Pino each scored in the first five minutes of the second quarter to cut the team's deficit to 7-4, but the Catamounts responded with goals from MacKay,
Alex Stanko and
James Barlow to extend its lead to 10-4 heading into the break.
Vermont went on a 4-0 run midway through the third quarter to jump out to a big lead over UMass Lowell, 14-5. The River Hawks were able to tally two of the final three scores of the period, but UVM still held a 15-7 advantage with just one quarter to play. White led the Catamounts in the third with three points on a pair of goals and one assist.
UMass Lowell cut the Catamount lead to 16-9 with six minutes remaining in the contest, but that was as close as the River Hawks would get, as Walsh and DiStefano added insurance goals to close out the 18-10 victory for UVM.
