Jessica Roach combined for 12 points to lead Vermont past Dartmouth, 19-11, on Wednesday as the Catamounts collected their third straight victory. Vermont improves to 6-3 overall following the win, while Dartmouth falls to 0-5.
VanderZalm led all scorers in the contest with a season-high six goals, while Roach also added six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore
Meredith Moore tallied a career-high four points (3 g, 1 ast), with all three of her goals coming in the first half.
VanderZalm also added six draw controls, as she passed former teammate
Sydney Mas for second place all-time in career draw controls at UVM, with 170.
The Catamounts posted a season-best 19 goals on the afternoon and have now tallied 15 goals or more in three straight contests.
Senior
Meg Hopkins stopped eight shots for Vermont to collect her sixth win of the year and set a new career-high for wins in a single season. Jessica Frieder and Julia Reiley combined to make six saves in goal for Dartmouth.
After a Dartmouth tally to open the game, Vermont's offense got going with four goals in a span of under four minutes. Roach gave UVM its first lead at the 22:55 mark, and then assisted on the following two goals from
Alex Bernier and Moore as the Catamounts opened a 4-1 advantage.
Vermont widened its lead to five goals as Roach and Moore collected their second tallies of the game, but Dartmouth answered behind a pair of points from Jaclyn Leto to pull back within three scores, 7-4.
The Catamounts registered the final four goals of the period to take an 11-4 advantage into the break. Moore notched her third goal of the contest during the run, which set a new career-high for the sophomore.
Sarah Byrne led an early Dartmouth charge in the second frame, scoring the opening two goals to cut the Big Green's deficit to 11-6 just three minutes into the half.
Vermont responded with four of the next five tallies, including a pair of free-position goals from VanderZalm, to widen its lead back to eight scores, 15-7.
Dartmouth closed the gap to 15-9 with over 12 minutes remaining following scores from Leto and Ingrid Hermanson, but that was as close as they would get, as
Alison Bolt, VanderZalm and
Elena McWright added insurance goals for UVM to close out the 19-11 victory.
