Vanessa VanderZalm registered four goals each to power Vermont to a 15-11 victory over Central Connecticut State in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Virtue Field. The Catamounts improve to 7-3 on the year with their fourth straight win, while CCSU falls to 2-6 overall.
Roach led all scorers in the contest with six points on four goals and two assists while picking up her fourth consecutive game with at least four scores. VanderZalm also added four goals, registering her fifth multi-goal performance of the year. Rookie
Bailey Saneman scored two times to collect her second straight game with a pair of scores.
Madison Hughes and Kylie Sullivan led the way for CCSU on the afternoon with seven of the Blue Devils' 11 goals in the contest.
Meg Hopkins stopped four shots to earn her fourth straight win in goal and seventh overall, while CCSU goalie Morgan Tullar made five saves in the losing effort.
Vermont and CCSU traded goals throughout the opening 15 minutes of play before Saneman and Roach tallied back-to-back goals in a span of 11 seconds to give UVM the 5-3 advantage.
The Catamounts registered the final three goals of the half, with Roach, VanderZalm and
Alex Bernier each picking up one apiece. Vermont headed into the break with an 8-3 advantage following the late run.
UVM padded its lead with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the second half, and proceeded to score the next three goals to open a 13-3 advantage with 18 minutes remaining. VanderZalm led the Catamounts during the streak with two of her four scores.
Between the 14:31 mark of the first half and 18:00 mark of the second, Vermont tallied 10 straight goals to open the commanding lead over CCSU.
Trailing 13-3 midway through the second period, CCSU received goals from Marissa Soto, Kylie Sullivan and Elyse Malecki to cut its deficit to 13-6 at the 12:36 mark.
After a goal from
Emma Tizard ended the Blue Devils' run, CCSU notched the next five goals, including three from Hughes, to pull within three scores of Vermont, 14-11.
The Catamounts won the ensuing draw control and worked the ball down into the attacking zone.
Alison Bolt was able to find the back of the net off a feed from
Elena McWright, as UVM pushed its lead to four, 15-11, with 1:45 to play.
UVM held CCSU off the board for the remaining minute-plus and earned the 15-11 win for its fourth straight victory.
