Jessica Roach matched her career-high with seven goals to lead Vermont past UMBC, 11-10, in the America East opener for UVM on Saturday at Virtue Field. Vermont won its fifth straight contest while improving to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. UMBC suffered its first league loss of the season, dropping to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in America East.
Roach tallied a game-high seven goals, as she equaled her career high in scores that she set earlier this season against Quinnipiac. Roach, who now has 137 goals in her career, moved into third place on UVM's all-time goals list and sits just four scores shy of moving into second place. The senior has nine multi-goal efforts on the year, including five straight games with four or more tallies.
Jennie Milligan led the UMBC attack with a team-high three goals, and Marissa Davey chipped in with a pair of goals and one assist.

Meg Hopkins stopped eight shots to collect her eighth victory of the season and fifth straight. Her counterpart, Kelsey Major, made eight saves in the losing effort for UMBC.
The Retrievers held a 2-1 advantage early in the contest before Roach got on the board with back-to-back goals to give Vermont its first lead of the game, 3-2, at the 21:30 mark.
Later in the period, the Retrievers tallied three straight, including a goal apiece from Milligan and Davey, to take a 6-4 advantage over the Catamounts. Roach responded with two more tallies in the final 1:16 of the half to even the game at 6-6 heading into the break.
Danielle Seifert and Roach notched the first two goals of the second half as UVM opened a two-goal advantage, 8-6, early in the frame. UMBC then registered three consecutive goals in less than a minute to retake the lead, 9-8, at the 25:39 mark.
Vermont answered with goals from Roach and
Courtney Cole to jump back ahead of the Retrievers, 10-9, with just over 20 minutes showing on the clock. Carolyn Jamison notched the game-tying tally just two minutes later off a feed from Sam Nolan, as UMBC evened the game at 10-10.
With 14:51 remaining in the contest, Roach registered her seventh goal of the contest to give Vermont the one-goal advantage, 11-10. The Catamount defense held strong for the remainder of the contest, keeping UMBC off the board for the remaining 14-plus minutes to close out their first conference win of the season.
