BETHESDA, Md. – Sophomore
Cam Milligan tallied a goal 20 seconds into the third overtime period to lift Vermont to an 11-10 victory over Air Force in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Landon School. UVM collected its second straight win, improving to 2-4 on the year, while Air Force dropped to 2-4 overall.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, Vermont earned a man-up opportunity heading into the third extra frame. With the Catamounts in the attacking zone, Milligan picked up a loose ball and fired a shot that beat goalie Doug Gouchoe to send Vermont on to the 11-10 triumph.
Ian MacKay led all Catamounts with four points (3 g, 1 ast), and Milligan,
Michael Clarke and
James Barlow each added a pair of scores in the contest.
Nick Bartlett and
John Everett registered a team-high two assists apiece.
Nick Hruby topped all scorers in the contest with four goals, while Keith Dreyer and Christopher Allen chipped in with two tallies each.
Sophomore goalie
Jon Kaplan made a career-high 13 saves in the tilt to improve to 2-1 on the year. Gouchoe stopped 15 shots in the losing effort for the Falcons.
The Catamounts opened the contest with the game's first two scores, as Barlow and
Michael Clarke gave Vermont a 2-0 advantage at the 6:31 mark. Air Force responded to tie the game at 2-2 following tallies from Nick Hruby and Chris Walsch.
In the final minute and a half of the first period, MacKay and Joe Matarazzo traded goals to send the game into the second quarter all tied up, 3-3.
The Falcons outscored UVM 3-1 in the second frame with goals from three different scorers, as they took a 6-4 advantage into halftime. MacKay registered the lone Catamount goal of the period off a feed from
John Everett.
Vermont regained the lead midway through the third quarter after registering the first three goals of the frame. Milligan,
Dyson White and Bartlett propelled the Catamount run with a goal apiece to put UVM out in front, 7-6.
Three straight goals by Air Force in a span of four plus minutes pushed the Falcons back ahead, 9-7, before Barlow was able to find the back of the net for UVM with just 24 seconds remaining to bring Vermont back within one score, 9-8.
With Air Force holding a 10-9 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Clarke registered his second score of the tilt to knot things up at 10-10.
In the final seconds of play, Vermont worked the ball down field and into the attack zone. White fired a shot that rang off the pipe with just one second showing on the clock, and the teams headed into overtime.
Vermont and Air Force registered four shots each in the three combined overtime periods, but neither squad was able to tally the game-winner until Milligan's early score in the third extra frame. The game-winner for the sophomore was the first of his Catamount career.
