LOWELL, Mass. – The Catamounts scored a season-high 23 goals behind multi-goal performances from seven different players, as they cruised past UMass Lowell, 23-9, in America East women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Wicked Blue Field. Vermont improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while UMass Lowell dropped to 0-15 on the year and 0-5 in America East.
Senior captain
Jessica Roach tallied five points (2 g, 3 ast) to move into a tie with former teammate
Sydney Mas for most points in a single season (70) in program history. Roach also sits just six goals shy of tying Mas for most goals by a Catamount in a single season.
Vanessa VanderZalm led all scorers in the contest with six points (5 g, 1 ast), while
Alison Bolt and
Courtney Cole added three scores apiece on the afternoon. Four other Catamounts tallied two goals each to round out the multi-goal performances.
Meghan Cobb notched the first goal of her Catamount career, and
Megan Wilson and
Becca Olsen each picked up their first career assists in the contest.
Devon McKercher and Emily Wright combined to register seven goals, and Jesse Jay added a game-high four assists to pace UMass Lowell.
Senior
Meg Hopkins collected her 10
th win of the season with a nine-save effort, while Courtney Barrett took the loss for the River Hawks despite making 10 stops.
The Catamounts held a 2-1 lead just under four minutes into the contest before they scored four straight to widen the lead to 6-1. Cole and VanderZalm tallied two goals apiece during the run to power the Catamount attack.
UMass Lowell closed the gap to 6-4 with three straight scores, including a pair from Wright, but Vermont responded with six of the final seven goals of the first half to take a 12-5 advantage.
Meredith Moore registered two goals, while VanderZalm and Cole added another tally each to pace UVM during the stretch.
Bolt netted Vermont's opening two goals of the second half, and the Catamounts went on an 8-0 run in a 10-minute span in the period to open a 21-6 lead over UMass Lowell. Seven different players found the back of the net for UVM during the dominating stretch.
Elena McWright and
Margaret Nealon added the final two Vermont goals of the contest, as the Catamounts closed out the victory and reached the double-digit win plateau for the second straight season.
UVM returns to Burlington to host Senior Day against New Hampshire on Saturday (April 25) at 1 p.m. With a win over UNH, Vermont would clinch a spot in the America East playoffs for the third consecutive season.
