BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Vermont Catamounts and UNC Asheville Bulldogs played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of soccer in the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic presented by Morgan Stanley and The Windjammer on Friday.

CatamounTV HighlightsUNC Asheville scored first. Zach Joens collected a ball on the right wing, cut into the middle of the field at the top of the penalty box, beat a UVM defender and hit a hard, low shot near post to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Vermont responded eight minutes later.
Shane Haley sent a through pass to
Brian Wright who was able to get behind the Asheville defense. Wright collected the pass and beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one opportunity with a low slotted shot.

Both teams went into halftime knotted at 1-1.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half but could not find the go ahead goal in regulation and neither team was able to net the golden goal in the overtime periods.

Vermont finished the game with an 18-4 advantage in shots and 7-3 lead in corner kicks, but could not find the finishing touch.

Greg Walton was credited with one save for the Catamounts, while Zak Davis made nine stops, including a few on point blank shots, for UNC Asheville.

Vermont moves to 1-3-1 overall, while UNC Asheville stands at 2-1-1 on the season.

The New Hampshire Wildcats earned a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut State University in the opening game of the tournament.

The Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic presented by Morgan Stanley and The Windjammer continues on Sunday (Sept. 13) at Virtue Field. UNC Asheville faces New Hampshire at 11 a.m. and will be followed by Central Connecticut versus Vermont at 1:30 p.m.
