"Stony Brook shot the ball better than us, particularly in the third quarter, and that was the difference," said head coach
Lori Gear McBride. "We lost our rhythm offensively at a critical point in the game and didn't have enough time to recover. I was pleased with some of our production off the bench,
Lauren Handy and
Hayley Robertson in particular."Â
Â
Sydney Smith paced the Catamount offense with 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Andreana Thomas scored 12 points and grabbed three steals, while rookie
Lauren Handy put up a season-best 10 points.
Â
Brittany Snow and Allyah Worely each reached double-figure scoring with a pair of steals for the Seawolves. Snow piled up 24 points and eight rebounds, while Worely added 16 points and was 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Stony Brook jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but a long 3-pointer with a minute left in the quarter by
Kylie Atwood brought the Catamounts to within one (11-10) of the Seawolves. Vermont's strong first-quarter defense forced six turnovers and held Stony Brook to 4-for-13 from the field.
Â
A pair of steals by Thomas fueled a 6-0 Vermont run, and made it a single possession game once again midway through the second quarter. Handy hit another triple for UVM and ended a three-minute scoring drought, but Stony Brook held onto a 28-22 lead after one half.
Â
The Seawolves used the third quarter to pull away, creating their largest advantage (46-29) after back-to-back pull-up threes by Worely and Christa Scognamiglio. Snow eclipsed the 20-point mark as she connected on two from the foul line to close the third quarter as Vermont trailed 50-35.
Â
Smith drained a pair of 3-pointers from the top of the key and Thomas knocked down two from the charity stripe to cut into Stony Brook's lead (66-56), but that's as close as the Catamounts would get as the Seawolves secured the conference win.
