The Catamounts' record moves to 6-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in America East with the tie. The Retrievers improve to 5-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference.
The first half was very one-sided as Vermont outshot UMBC, 10-3, and 28-9 on the night.
Savana Yurick fired four shots in the opening 10 minutes as UMBC keeper Leah Roth (11 saves) made three stops to keep the game scoreless.
The Retrievers struck first in the 62nd minute from the head of Gabby Boehmer. Nikki Saad dished a cross from the edge of the box and Boehmer knocked in her fourth goal of the season into the left side of the net.
Vermont answered back when
Sarah Martin tallied her third goal of the year in the 79th minute. Yurick dribbled to the goal line, turned to her right, and passed a cross into the six-yard box where Martin was waiting for the one-timer.
As the contest moved into the first overtime session,
Julia Smith had a chance to end it for the Catamounts. The freshman lofted a bending shot near the net, but the attempt sailed too wide of the far post.
In the final minute of the second overtime period,
Nikki McFarland was one-on-one with Roth, but could not produce a walk-off goal.
Caitie Green sent a through ball to McFarland as she rushed through the UMBC defense. McFarland put a right-footed touch on the ball, but the shot was right at Roth for the save.
